What do I need to know before an angiogram procedure?

  • Patients must be accompanied by a friend or family member over the age of 18

  • Patients cannot eat or drink (this includes water) at least 6 hours prior to the procedure

  • Patients may not drive and should have an adult with them for 24 hours following IV sedation

  • Glucophage/Metformin should be held 24 hours prior to procedure

  • Patients must hold all diabetic medicine the day of procedure

  • Discontinue Coumadin 3 days prior to procedure

  • Please get lab work done 2-3 days prior to procedure at any Sentara outpatient lab (if Doctor ordered)

  • Bring up-to-date medications/medication list to procedure


**If you have a dye allergy, please let us know ASAP — we will need to call a dye allergy prep into your pharmacy**

What do I need to know before a dialysis procedure??

•  Patients must be accompanied by a friend or family member over the age of 18 if they would like sedation unless they come on EMT stretcher transport

Patients may not drive and should have an adult with them for 24 hours following IV sedation

•  Patients cannot eat or drink (this includes water) at least 6 hours prior to the procedure

•  Patients must hold all diabetic medicine the day of procedure

•  Discontinue Coumadin 3 days prior to procedure

•  Bring up-to-date medications/medication list to procedure

Will I get sedation during my procedure?

For their procedure, most patients received moderate sedation, sometimes called twilight sedation.  Patients who received sedation will need someone with them to drive them home afterwards.  Many patients can select to use only local anesthesia (numbing medicine) and would not need someone to be with them afterwards.
